  • Product information

The Tanuki models came to life thanks to a unique coincidence and a heartfelt collaboration.

Japanese washi paper has a tradition of more than a 1000 years, with a variety of uses. But it was only after Mr. Itioi and Wildling crossed paths that this magical fabric found its way into minimal footwear.

Fibers from the Abaca plant are woven together using a special technique making the Tanuki model breathable and water permeable.

The weave, together with the paper-textile properties, makes it the ideal shoe for warm conditions. For the Tanuki Koi, a fully transparent supply and production chain was established there, built on a wonderful partnership.

At only 2 to 5.3 ounces it's one of the lightest shoes in the world - giving an unprecedented feeling of freedom.

The permeable paper upper with its super quick drying qualities makes the Tanuki ideal for water adventures - just remove the hempling insoles, and simply replace them with washi insoles (available separately).

  • In Balance With Nature

    Less-Is-More for Healthy Children’s Feet

It’s in our nature to go barefoot most of the time, as discovered by Professor Zech of the University of Jena and confirmed by numerous studies. Children intuitively understand what our feet are made for – no wonder they often prefer to take off their shoes. Barefoot or in minimal shoes, their feet stay flexible, strong and sensitive.

  • Abacá – Tradition Meets Modernity

The Fibers Holding Tanuki Koi Together

Abacá, also known as Manila hemp, is an East Asian banana species used as a fiber plant and traditionally for papermaking. The Wildling Washi is composed of 75% Abacá plant fibers combined with 25% recycled polyester to ensure the necessary durability. For the Tanuki Koi, a fully transparent supply and production chain was established there, built on a wonderful partnership.

  • Light as a feather

    The paper shoe

Depending on what size it is, the Tanuki weighs about as much as one or two scoops of ice cream. All thanks to the feather-light upper material, which consists of 75 percent paper. A shoe made of paper? You bet! The paper fabric is both robust and breathable.
